The LORENTZ PSk2 large-scale solar pumping system

LORENTZ · SINES Export technical team · Updated July 2026

PSk2 is the LORENTZ platform for serious water volumes: centre pivots, town water supply, utilities and industry. Seven controllers cover 8 to 90 kW, the pumps move up to 457 m³/h, and the SmartSolution turns the installation into a true hybrid that blends solar with grid or generator power, seamlessly and automatically. This page maps the system.

Architecture: an inverter that thinks in water

The PSk2 controller combines a highly efficient digital inverter and a variable speed drive with the water application software of the LORENTZ ecosystem. It accepts up to 850 V of PV input and outputs 3 × 380/400/415 V at 0 to 60 Hz, which means it drives standard three-phase AC motors: the 6" to 10" multistage submersibles and the surface pumps of the range run at 25 to 55 Hz with soft starts that are gentle on both the motor and any generator behind it. The stainless steel IP54 outdoor housing keeps full power up to 50 °C ambient.

PSk2-910 kW3 × 17 A
PSk2-1515 kW3 × 24 A
PSk2-2121 kW3 × 33 A
PSk2-2525 kW3 × 40 A
PSk2-4037 kW3 × 65 A
PSk2-10090 kW3 × 160 A

Maximum efficiency is 98 percent across the family. Like the PS2, the PSk2 carries eight sensor inputs, the SunSensor, a pulse water meter input, datalogging for up to ten years and the constant pressure, flow, level and timer applications, all configured through the PumpScanner app.

SmartSolution: hybrid power done properly

Most hybrid pumping is a changeover switch. The PSk2 SmartSolution is a blender: the SmartPSUk2 (available for PSk2-7 to PSk2-40) feeds grid or generator power into the solar supply, so the controller uses every available watt of sun first and tops up with exactly the external power the duty still needs. The SmartStart completes the loop by starting and stopping an auto-start generator against your programmed targets: flow, volume, pressure, level or time of day. On 5.5 and 11 kW motor duties where hybrid is the primary requirement, the PSk3 controller goes one step further and integrates the AC input natively in a single unit.

Solar first, fuel last

The result is 24-hour pumping capability with the solar investment fully utilised and the generator reduced to a top-up role. Right-sized motor control also means the generator itself can be smaller than conventional pump systems demand.

What PSk2 does at scale

  • Irrigation: pivots, large sprinkler blocks and drip stations, with the pressure held steady through the day. Most existing irrigation systems convert to solar without replacing the distribution hardware.
  • Drinking water: PSk2 systems serve as the primary water supply for communities of up to 400,000 people, pumping to storage for 24-hour availability.
  • Utilities and industry: water abstraction, pressure boosting and process water, where unreliable grids or peak-rate tariffs hurt productivity.

Frequently asked questions

Can a PSk2 system really run 24 hours a day?

Yes, with the SmartSolution (SmartPSUk2, available for PSk2-7 to PSk2-40). Solar carries the day, the SmartPSUk2 blends in grid or generator power as the light fades, and the SmartStart manages the generator automatically against your water targets. Communities and pivots run around the clock this way.

Which motors does PSk2 drive?

Standard three-phase 380 V AC motors, operated at 25 to 55 Hz. That includes the LORENTZ 6" to 10" multistage submersibles and the surface range, with soft starts and infinitely variable speed control that extend motor life.

Where does PSk2 stop and PS2 start?

PSk2 starts at 8 kW of controller power and runs to 90 kW; below that, the PS2 system covers the duty down to 150 W. Flow tells the same story: PSk2 surface systems reach 457 m³/h against 60 m³/h for PS2.

How is a PSk2 project sized?

In COMPASS, the official LORENTZ planning software, which simulates the water delivery through the year at your site. Send us the duty point and the water source data; we return the full system with the simulation and a wholesale quote.
