Solar pumping systems for reliable Water Supply in Africa

The ACS355 is a solar drive converting the DC power output from the solar panel to AC power supply for pump operation.

The ACS355 is designed for continuous as well as intermittent operation. The system is suitable for various water supply systems including irrigation. ABB ACS355 automatically adjusts the pump flow to the availability of energy, increases the service life of the installation and facilitates its maintenance and detects system malfunctions.

The complete system consists of three components: PV cell, ABB solar drive, pump.

 

The built-in maximum power point tracking functionality enables the pump to run at maximum power using available solar power. It is independent from the grid and produces no pollution or noise. For large systems, a combiner box (junction box) with all cables from the solar modules could be connected into one set of power input cables before connecting them to an ACS 355.

The ABB solar pump drive can also be equipped to operate from the grid when there is not enough sunlight to run the pump. Solar power (DC) and AC power must never under any circumstances be connected at the same time. To prevent the AC and DC power sources from being connected by accident, we strongly recommend that you use an interlocked changeover switch The switch must be sized according to the ABB ACS355 power ratings.

Embedded, pump-specific features such as dry run detection and sensorless flow calculation are used to protect and monitor the pumping station. The ability to operate on both solar (DC power) and the grid (conventional AC power) is the greatest advantage of ABB’s solar pump drive.

Solar pumping systems are rapidly becoming more popular for uses in applications such as agricultural irrigation, forestry, fish farming, desert control, water supply for islands, wastewater treatment and municipal engineering. City parks, tourist sites, resorts, and even landscapes and fountains in residential areas can be run with solar power.
