What is a Victron energy meter for?

A Victron Energy Meter measures, in real time, the voltage, current, active power and the energy consumed or produced at a specific point of the installation. It complements the SmartShunt and the BMV — which monitor the battery side on direct current — by adding measurement on the AC side: grid, solar inverter or load feed. The data is sent to a GX device (Cerbo GX, Ekrano GX) and then to the VRM portal.

Self-consumption control (ESS)

In an ESS (Energy Storage System) built around a MultiPlus-II or a Quattro, the energy meter placed at the grid connection point measures the exchanges with the grid. It enables self-consumption optimisation, the maintenance of zero feed-in, and compliance with the grid operator's power limits, by finely controlling the charging and discharging of the batteries.

Measuring an AC-coupled solar inverter

When a solar inverter is coupled on the AC side, a second energy meter measures its production. The system thus knows the solar share and includes it in the energy balance and in the monitoring, for complete production / consumption / storage tracking.

Site monitoring and sub-metering

Beyond ESS, energy meters are used for sub-metering of circuits: the consumption of a workshop, a marina berth, an electric-vehicle charging point or a building. Each meter appears as a dedicated device in VictronConnect and on the VRM portal, with history and graphs.

Direct measurement or current transformers

The ET112, ET340, EM24 and EM540 models perform a direct measurement: the power cable passes through the meter (up to 65 A per phase in three-phase, 100 A in single-phase for the ET112). The VM-3P75CT works with current transformers (CTs) clipped around the cables: ideal for high currents (up to 80 A per phase) and for existing installations where you do not want to cut the conductors.

Connection: RS485 or Ethernet

The ET112, ET340 and EM540 communicate over RS485 to the GX (via the RS485-to-USB interface). The EM24 Ethernet and the VM-3P75CT connect over Ethernet; the VM-3P75CT also has a VE.Can port. Configuration is done in VictronConnect.

Which model to choose?

VM-3P75CT — the recommended choice for new three-phase or two-phase installations and high currents, thanks to its current transformers and fast sampling. EM540 / ET340 — three-phase up to 65 A per phase in direct measurement for ESS and bidirectional metering. EM24 Ethernet — three-phase when RS485 is not available. ET112 — single-phase installations up to 100 A.
